Ohio Equal Rights condemns today's U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for hundreds of thousands of people from Haiti and Syria who have built their lives, families, and communities in the United States.
At its core, this case is about something most Americans understand deeply: when our families are in danger, we do everything we can to protect them. Throughout history, people have crossed borders, left behind homes, and rebuilt their lives in pursuit of safety, stability, and opportunity for those they love. The families affected by this decision are no different.
Instead of recognizing that shared humanity, today's ruling removes legal safeguards from people who came to this country seeking refuge from extraordinary circumstances. Many have lived, worked, raised children, and contributed to their communities in the United States for years.
"Equal rights are not meaningful if they depend on where someone was born or whether they are politically convenient," said Lis Regula, Executive Co-Chair of Ohio Equal Rights. "This decision places hundreds of thousands of families in unnecessary uncertainty and undermines the principle that every person deserves dignity, fairness, and the opportunity to build a safe future."
Ohio Equal Rights believes that protecting human rights requires standing with all communities facing discrimination and exclusion. Today's decision serves as another reminder that attacks on one community rarely remain isolated. Efforts to erode the rights of immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, women, people of color, religious minorities, and other marginalized communities are often interconnected, relying on the same narratives of fear and division.
We reject those narratives.
We stand with our Haitian and Syrian neighbors, with immigrant communities across Ohio, and with everyone working to build stronger, safer, and more welcoming communities.
Ohio Equal Rights calls on Congress to enact permanent protections for individuals who have sought safety in the United States and urges policymakers to pursue reforms that strengthen equal justice under the law and ensure that our courts protect the rights and freedoms of all people.
The promise of America has never been that freedom belongs only to some. It is that every generation has the opportunity—and the responsibility—to expand liberty, dignity, and justice for those who come after us.
Ohio Equal Rights remains committed to that work.
