NBC4: Advocates begin push to add marriage protections to Ohio constitution

by Lexi Lepof for NBC4

More than a decade since same-sex marriage was legalized, the plaintiff in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Case, Ohioan Jim Obergefell, says the right is at risk. Advocates want the chance to ask Ohio voters to protect it.

“I did not expect ten years later to be worried about Obergefell being overturned,” Obergefell said.

The man behind the historic case is backing a push to get a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot in Ohio. The “Ohio Right to Marry Amendment” would reverse an amendment passed by Ohioans in 2004 that says a valid marriage is only between “one man and one woman.”

“It’s really important for the people of Ohio to say, ‘we believe in a state where everyone is welcome,’” Obergefell said. “We believe in a state where everyone has the right to live their life, to commit to the person they love on an equal basis.”
